Pizza in the Piazza

On Friday, October 23rd, the Polk Street School Compact Committee held its "Pizza in the Piazza" fundraiser on the site of the future outdoor learning environment. Due to the blustery conditions however, the school auditorium was transformed into one big indoor pizza party! Guests enjoyed delicious pizza from D'Anna's Pizzeria and danced to music provide by a DJ.

On Friday, October 23rd, our 2nd graders met an unsual new friend, "Mr. Nixon", a triceratops skull. The boys and girls really "dug" their new friend and enjoyed searching for fossils.

Principal's Bookshelf (4D & 4Sa)

At Polk Street School, we continue to foster a love of reading in our students and promote literacy.

Principal’s Bookshelf helps students develop critical listening and comprehension skills by providing them with a meaningful context in which they learn how to think critically about the books they listen to, engage in reflective dialogue with peers, and express their opinions and reactions in conversation. Research has shown that being read to helps to improve reading ability.

The students meet with the principal and enjoy their bagged lunch, snack, and drink as they listen to a book that is read to them. The picture book selected is a book that is enjoyable, has multiple interpretations, and perhaps a lesson to be learned.

Parade of Voices: A Writing Celebration

On Thursday, October 8th, the U.S, Senate passed a resolution declaring October 20th as the National Day on Writing. Polk Street School students, staff, and parents joined together for Parade of Voices: A Writing Celebration.

There were two assemblies with students sharing various forms of writing (cards, poems, lists, letters, songs, descriptive writing, personal narrative, persuasive writing, etc.) Keep your eyes and ears peeled—ideas and inspiration for writing are lurking everywhere!

In the words of Carol Burnett, a famous comedian, “Words, once they are printed have a life of their own.” The students did a fabulous job sharing their written pieces as they came to life!

"Little Doctors" Blood Drive

On Thursday, October 15th, the 5th graders hosted the Third Annual "Little Doctors" Blood Drive in conjunction with the Franklin Square Interschool PTA. Prior to this event representatives from the L. I. Blood Services visited their classrooms and presented an educational program about blood and the importance of blood donation. 80 pints were collected in all! Thank you to all who donated!

Pumpkin Patch

On Tuesday, October 6th, the open side field at Polk Street School was transformed into a pumpkin patch filled with fall foliage. Students picked out the pumpkin of their choice, compliments of the PTA. Scarecrows, bales of hay, chrysanthemums, and corn stalks, lined the field for a colorful autumn day.
